Yakima Monster APA Review

It’s a wintery Saturday afternoon in the big city and your wife drags you along to the local arthouse cinema – not to see the latest Hollywood blockbuster, obviously, but to endure a French romantic comedy with subtitles. What do you do?

Well, if you’re me, you order a bottle of Yakima Monster by Auckland’s own Liberty Brewing Co. and suddenly everything is A-Okay.

ABV: 6%

IBU: 45

The bottle: Green monster hands reach out from the blue beer label, reminiscent of Godzilla, Mothra, or any number of cheesy Japanese monster movies. Oh, wait…

Blurb about the beer: Get those images of Godzilla and Mothra out of your head! I know you were thinking it, but this beer has nothing to do with Japan whatsoever. Yakima is actually a region in the state of Washington USA where some of my favourite hop varieties are grown.

This monster of a pale ale showcases several of them. It’s an easy drinking beer, flavoursome enough for your father ‘n law to exclaim “Wow – that’s fruity!” yet complex enough for any green blooded hop-head to appreciate. Enjoy this beer responsibly, at refrigeration temperature with your friends or family.

Tastes like: The perfect antidote to the whimsical French film that I was watching.

The beer’s big tropical hop flavour is strong but well-balanced with biscuit malt. It’s surprisingly dry – not nearly as dank or oily as big hop APAs tend to be – and lip-smackingly satisfying.

I drank it straight from its 500ml bottle in the middle of a dark cinema, so I was in no position to note either the colour of the beer or its aroma.

Verdict: It’s a goody, but then I always knew it would be. Liberty’s Yakima Monster has been around for a long while now and, well, I’m probably the last beer blogger in New Zealand to review it. Still, better late than never, right?

Movie/beer pairing: If your Mrs forces you to watch French comedy Blind Date with her, then you could do far worse than grab yourself a bottle of Yakima Monster to wash it down. It’s not a bad film, but it’s not a particularly good one, either. Check out the trailer, below.
