Shakespeare ‘The Lover’ Blonde Review

I’m a crappy husband. That much should already be obvious to you all. But I sunk to a new low on Valentine’s Day this year when Mrs Best Beer bought me this bottle of ‘The Lover’ blonde beer made by Auckland brewbar The Shakespeare, and I got her nothing at all.

I know, I know – the husband who forgets Valentine’s Day is such a cliché! Hopefully I’ll be able to drink away my guilt when I crack open this beer…

ABV: 5%

The Shakespeare: Not the William Shakespeare, writer of plays where everyone says words like “shalt”, “thou” and “thee” – the Auckland hotel, pub and brewery that was first established in 1898. It brews its own beer, which is available at selected supermarkets and liquor stores in the city.

Blurb on the bottle: It won’t take much for this blonde to seduce you. The Lover tempts you with hints of passionfruit & grape thanks to the finest Nelson Sauvin hops.

Tastes like: Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Though art my lovely and more temperate. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, and summer’s lease hath all too short a date.

Sorry about that readers. This beer has got me spouting sonnets. What I meant to say was this beer is crisp and clean, well carbonated, and has a light passionfruit flavour that is sweetly subtle.

It’s not overly complex. In fact, it’s sort of like a dessert beer, or a wicked little palate cleanser, rather than a full flavoured drop that demands your attention.

The verdict: It’s a goody.

Beer/movie combination: In the spirit of love and Shakespeare, I’m going to recommend you watch a movie that ticks both of those boxes (and it might just get me out of the dog box if I watch it with Mrs Best Beer HQ once I’ve finished with this review).

That movie is the delightfully stupid 10 Things I Hate About You, a guilty pleasure that I know I shouldn’t like, but I just do…
