Mike’s Flight of the Falcon APA Review
Moving sucks. Am I right?
After a full-on day of moving heavy furniture, scrubbing the old place clean, and unpacking everything at the new place, I felt like a craft beer was in order. Luckily, I had this bottle of Mike’s Flight of the Falcon APA rolling around on the bottom shelf of my fridge, and it was still cold…
ABV: 5.7%
Blurb on the bottle: Falconer’s Flight Hop blend pays homage to American craft brewing legend Glen Falconer and the 2010 USA West Coast Pale Ale boom.
Trying to create something similar to the wave of beers released with this hop blend, we’ve rounded up a cast of pilots from the RNZAF Ohakea base that just happen to be craft beer nuts, and formed the collaborative brewing team for “Flight of the Falcon”.
The result – an approachable, drinkable pale ale, in true Pacific North West Coast style.
The review: I’m so freakin’ tired right now that even a can of Lion Brown would taste alright… Actually, scratch that. I’ll never, ever be that tired.
Anyway, the point is I was already predisposed to enjoy this beer, so it should surprise exactly no-one that I did enjoy it very much, thank you. It had a juicy, fruity flavour, with a big grapefruit kick. It’s sweet and sour, with a lingering bitter finish.
I like the beer label, too, but I’m wondering why a beer would need a hatchet to catch a falcon? I suppose it could throw it and knock the bird out of the sky, then eat it.
The verdict: Mike’s Flight of the Falcon APA tastes good to me. It’s better than Mike’s ‘One More Pale Ale’, which I reviewed last time.
Beer/movie combination: Like I said at the top, I’ve been busy moving house, so I haven’t had time to watch anything new lately. The name of this beer reminds me of a movie that used to freak me out when I was a little kid, though. It was called Flight of the Navigator…
…I think I watched this movie so many times when I was little that I wore out our VHS copy!
